It is in the national interest of the United States to preserve what is left of our manufacturing capacity. Accordingly, it is a proper use of the public purse to help save our automakers from dissolution. They are not beyond redemption; however, a few key steps need to be taken for the infusion of public funds to make these companies viable in the long run. Our politicians say as much; however, there has been a lack of understanding of the root cause of Detroit's problems as well as a lack of a comprehensive plan to turn the Big Three around.
